Kent Recycling Center
Route 52 and Horsepound Road, Kent Lakes
Saturdays from 9 AM to 1 PM - All year round
We invite you to come visit our Unshopping Center. We
are open every Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM on Route 52
across from Horsepound Road and just below Bottle Gate
Farms.
We Recycle all the traditional items such as Glass (clear,
green and brown); Tin cans; Aluminum (foil, cans, and
scraps), Plastics (those numbered 1,2,and 3); Newspaper;
Junk mail; Cardboard and Scrap metal.
We Also Recycle brown paper bags, plastic bags, Styrofoam
peanuts, wire coat hangers, eyeglasses, clothing, egg
cartons, Motor oil, batteries of all kinds; and, all refundables.
Our "instant recycling share table" resembles
a flea market where everything is free. Any member can
place something of value on the table and any other member
can take it home... and this service is free!
We Also Accept Household Garbage and Bulk Items! The
only things we are not authorized to accept are hazardous
wastes and construction and demolition debris. However,
we can tell you where to dispose of these items.
Our Rules Are Simple: The recyclables must be clean and
the cardboard flattened. Each item has it's separate container.
There is a yearly membership fee of $50, a fee of $3 for
a 30lb bag of garbage and a sliding charge for bulk items
(see chart below). Freon containing items such as freezers,
air conditioners and dehumidifiers cost $15, overstuffed
chairs and sofas vary from $5 to $15 and scrap metal costs
$1 to $10 depending on weight and size.
The Center is Operated by the Kent Recycling Commission
whose members are appointed by the town. They are assisted
by a large group of volunteers. The Center subsists entirely
on the income from its fees. The fee for garbage covers
our recycling costs. The yearly membership fee covers
capital expenses.
Our Center Has the Highest Recycling Rate in Putnam County.
We would love to have you join us as a patron, a volunteer
worker, or even as a spectator!
In Kent, the alternative to our Center is curbside collection.
It is more costly and less efficient. The result is that
more of the resources of our planet end up in a landfill.
They should be recycled so that our children can use them
and so that others on our planet can live a good life.
